Coating Concrete in the Sunniest City on Earth
Epoxy flooring in Yuma has to cope with more sun and heat than almost anywhere in the country. Guinness lists Yuma as the sunniest city on Earth, and Wikipedia reports that the sun shines during about 90% of daylight hours. The city averages 117 days a year at or above 100°F, usually from April through October, and the July average high is 107.6°F. A floor coating here has to resist UV, hold up to hot tires, and be installed by a crew that knows how resin behaves when the slab is warm.
Sun and heat change which coating makes sense
Standard epoxy is a strong, thick base coat, and it bonds well to ground concrete. Its weakness is sunlight. HomeGuide rates epoxy's UV resistance as poor to fair and polyaspartic's as excellent. In a Yuma garage where the door stays open on a west-facing driveway, an epoxy-only floor can yellow and chalk. Most floors we install pair an epoxy or polyaspartic base with a UV-stable polyaspartic topcoat. Heat matters during the install too. HomeGuide notes that warm temperatures speed hardening and lists 60°F to 85°F as the range for applying epoxy. For much of the year Yuma is far above that by midday, so we start early, mix smaller batches and pick products rated for the conditions.
Blowing sand and grit
Much of the land around Yuma is sand. The USDA describes the Superstition soil series, whose type location is a few miles east of San Luis, as sandy soil that formed in wind-deposited sand on dunes. That sand ends up in garages and on patios, and it gets ground in by shoes and tires. A coating with flake texture and a hard topcoat hides it between cleanings and resists the scratching that dulls bare concrete and thin paint.
The homes we work on
Yuma's housing is mostly built in the last fifty years. American Community Survey figures (2019 to 2023) summarized by Point2Homes put the median year built at 1990, with about 15% of units from the 1970s, 14% from the 1980s, 17% from the 1990s and 19% from the 2000s. Homes are slab-on-grade, so the work is garages, carports, patios and interior slabs, not basements. About 56% of housing units are single-family detached and about 19% are mobile homes. Many manufactured homes have a carport, a concrete pad or a covered patio instead of a closed garage, and those slabs take a coating too.
Systems we install
- Garage floor coating: a ground slab, a bonded base coat, color or flake, and a clear UV-stable topcoat.
- Flake floors: vinyl chips broadcast into the base coat for texture and a finish that hides sand and dust.
- Polyaspartic coatings: fast-curing and UV-stable, with a wide application temperature range.
- Patio and pool deck coatings: textured, lighter-colored systems for slabs that sit in direct sun.
- Metallic epoxy: a poured, marbled finish for interior slabs, home offices and game rooms.
- Shop and commercial floors: thicker systems for equipment buildings, hangars, warehouses and service bays.
What every install includes
- An on-site look at the slab, including a moisture check and notes on cracks and old coatings
- Diamond grinding of the full floor and edges, then dust removal
- Crack, chip and joint repair
- Base coat, color or flake, and topcoat
- An install time set around the day's temperatures
- Written cure times for foot traffic, furniture and vehicles
Where We Work
Yuma is the center of our service area. We also coat floors in Fortuna Foothills, Somerton, San Luis, Avenue B and C, Donovan Estates, El Prado Estates, Gadsden, Rancho Mesa Verde and Wellton, and across the Colorado River in Winterhaven and Bard, California. Each area has its own mix. Fortuna Foothills has many seasonal homes whose owners want the work done while they are away or before they arrive in the fall. San Luis has grown fast, with newer houses and garages. Older neighborhoods in Yuma, Somerton and the colonias south of town have more slabs that have been painted, patched or left bare for decades. Farm country toward Wellton and Bard has equipment buildings and shops. Each area page covers what we know about homes and floors there.

Why Homeowners Call Yuma Epoxy Flooring Pros
Coatings picked for the sun
Garage and patio floors get a UV-stable topcoat so they hold their color with the door open or in direct light.
Installs timed for the heat
In hot months we start early, check slab temperature, and mix batches sized so the resin goes down before it starts to set.
Real grinding, every floor
Every slab is diamond ground and every crack is filled before the first coat. Thin coats on unground concrete are what peel under hot tires.

Common Questions
How much does epoxy flooring cost in Yuma?
HomeGuide's national range for professionally installed epoxy is $4 to $10 per square foot, or about $1,600 to $5,800 for a two-car garage. Polyaspartic systems, which we often use here for UV resistance, run $5 to $12 per square foot. Old paint removal, crack repair and the finish you pick move the total. We give you a written price after seeing the floor.
How much epoxy do I need for a 1,000 square foot floor?
A gallon of 100% solids resin covers about 1,600 square feet at one mil thick, so at a 10 mil coat it covers roughly 160 square feet. A 1,000 square foot floor would take about 6 gallons per 10 mil coat, and a full system has more than one coat. Installed, HomeGuide's $4 to $10 per square foot range puts 1,000 square feet at about $4,000 to $10,000.
Will epoxy turn yellow in the Arizona sun?
Plain epoxy can yellow and chalk with UV exposure, and HomeGuide rates its UV resistance as poor to fair. A polyaspartic or aliphatic urethane topcoat over the base protects the color. For any floor that gets direct sun, including a garage with the door left open, we put a UV-stable topcoat on top.
Can you install a floor coating in the Yuma summer?
Yes, with planning. Heat speeds up how fast resin hardens, so we start early in the morning, keep the garage door shaded or closed during the install where we can, check the slab temperature and mix smaller batches. Some exterior work, such as a pool deck in full sun, is better scheduled for the cooler months.
Are store-bought epoxy kits worth it?
Kits on Yuma store shelves run from about $125 to $700, and HomeGuide says water-based coatings may need a new coat every 3 to 5 years. Kits usually rely on acid etching instead of grinding, and a thin coat on poorly prepared concrete is what lifts under hot tires. For a small, shaded floor a kit can be fine; for a garage that bakes all summer, prep and a UV-stable topcoat make the difference.
Is a coated garage floor slippery?
A smooth gloss coating can be slick when wet or dusty. Flake floors have texture built in, and we can add a fine anti-slip aggregate to the topcoat on solid-color floors, patios and pool decks.
