Frequently Asked Questions
Epoxy Flooring Questions
How much does epoxy flooring cost in Yuma?
HomeGuide's national range for professionally installed epoxy is $4 to $10 per square foot, or about $1,600 to $5,800 for a two-car garage. Polyaspartic systems, which we often use here for UV resistance, run $5 to $12 per square foot. Old paint removal, crack repair and the finish you pick move the total. We give you a written price after seeing the floor.
How much epoxy do I need for a 1,000 square foot floor?
A gallon of 100% solids resin covers about 1,600 square feet at one mil thick, so at a 10 mil coat it covers roughly 160 square feet. A 1,000 square foot floor would take about 6 gallons per 10 mil coat, and a full system has more than one coat. Installed, HomeGuide's $4 to $10 per square foot range puts 1,000 square feet at about $4,000 to $10,000.
Will epoxy turn yellow in the Arizona sun?
Plain epoxy can yellow and chalk with UV exposure, and HomeGuide rates its UV resistance as poor to fair. A polyaspartic or aliphatic urethane topcoat over the base protects the color. For any floor that gets direct sun, including a garage with the door left open, we put a UV-stable topcoat on top.
Can you install a floor coating in the Yuma summer?
Yes, with planning. Heat speeds up how fast resin hardens, so we start early in the morning, keep the garage door shaded or closed during the install where we can, check the slab temperature and mix smaller batches. Some exterior work, such as a pool deck in full sun, is better scheduled for the cooler months.
Are store-bought epoxy kits worth it?
Kits on Yuma store shelves run from about $125 to $700, and HomeGuide says water-based coatings may need a new coat every 3 to 5 years. Kits usually rely on acid etching instead of grinding, and a thin coat on poorly prepared concrete is what lifts under hot tires. For a small, shaded floor a kit can be fine; for a garage that bakes all summer, prep and a UV-stable topcoat make the difference.
Is a coated garage floor slippery?
A smooth gloss coating can be slick when wet or dusty. Flake floors have texture built in, and we can add a fine anti-slip aggregate to the topcoat on solid-color floors, patios and pool decks.
Garage Floor Coating Questions
How much does it cost to coat a two-car garage in Yuma?
HomeGuide's national range is about $1,600 to $5,800 for epoxy and $2,000 to $6,900 for polyaspartic in a two-car garage. Paint removal, oil damage and the finish you pick move the total. We give you a written price after seeing the floor.
Why did my garage floor coating peel where the tires sit?
That is usually hot tire pickup. Tires that have been on hot pavement soften a thin or poorly bonded coating, and it lifts as the tire cools and pulls away. A ground surface, a thicker base and a hard topcoat resist it far better than a kit applied over etched concrete.
How long before I can park on my new garage floor?
HomeGuide says polyaspartic is ready for heavy vehicle traffic in 24 to 48 hours, and epoxy generally needs 2 to 7 days before driving. Heat shortens some cure times, so we give you a specific schedule for your floor.
Does a garage floor coating help with dust?
Yes. Bare concrete sheds fine dust from its own surface, and sand tracked in from outside settles into the pores. A sealed coating stops the concrete from dusting and lets you sweep or blow sand out in a few minutes.
Polyaspartic Floor Coating Questions
Is polyaspartic better than epoxy for a garage in Arizona?
For a floor that gets sun, polyaspartic holds its color much better; HomeGuide rates its UV resistance excellent and epoxy's poor to fair. Epoxy is thicker per coat and costs a little less. Many floors here get an epoxy base with a polyaspartic topcoat.
How fast does polyaspartic cure?
HomeGuide says it is usually dry to the touch within a few hours, with full cure for heavy vehicles in 24 to 48 hours. Heat speeds it up, which is why we plan installs around the temperature.
Can I install polyaspartic myself?
It is possible, but it is hard. The working time is short, and in Yuma heat it gets shorter. HomeGuide lists it as not DIY-friendly, and a coat that sets before it is spread leaves lap marks and thin spots.
How much does a polyaspartic garage floor cost?
HomeGuide's national range is $5 to $12 per square foot, or about $2,000 to $6,900 for a two-car garage. Flakes, custom colors and extra repair work add to that. We give you a written number after seeing the slab.
Epoxy Flake Floors Questions
Are flake floors slippery?
They are less slippery than smooth gloss coatings because the chips create texture under the topcoat. On floors that get wet often, such as near a pool gate, we can add a fine anti-slip aggregate to the topcoat.
What color flake hides dirt best in Yuma?
Blends with tan, gray and brown tones hide desert sand and dust best. Very dark blends show dust and very light blends show tire marks. We bring samples so you can compare.
How much do flake floors cost?
HomeGuide's national installed ranges are $4 to $10 per square foot for epoxy and $5 to $12 for polyaspartic, with flakes and custom colors adding $0.50 to $2.00 per square foot. We give a written price after seeing your floor.
Can flake be added to an existing coated floor?
Only if the existing coating is sound and well bonded. If it is peeling or yellowed, it is usually better to grind it off and start clean so the new system has a solid base.
Patio & Pool Deck Coatings Questions
Can you put epoxy on a pool deck in Arizona?
Plain epoxy is a poor choice in full Arizona sun because it can yellow and get slick when wet. A UV-stable system with texture, or a cool-deck style coating, works better outdoors. HomeGuide lists cool-deck coatings at $4 to $6 per square foot.
What coating keeps a pool deck coolest?
Light colors and textured cool-deck style coatings stay cooler than dark or smooth finishes. HomeGuide notes cool-deck coatings help lower surface temperatures. No coating makes concrete cold in July, but color makes a real difference.
How much does it cost to coat a patio in Yuma?
HomeGuide's national range for an epoxy patio of 200 to 400 square feet is $800 to $4,000. UV-stable systems, texture, and crack repair can raise that. We give a written price on site.
When is the best time of year to coat a patio in Yuma?
Fall through spring is easiest because the slab stays cooler and coatings have more working time. Summer work is possible on shaded slabs if we start early in the morning.
Metallic Epoxy Floors Questions
How much does a metallic epoxy floor cost?
Bob Vila's cost guide puts metallic epoxy at $5 to $12 per square foot, which works out to roughly $1,000 to $2,400 for a 200 square foot room. Design complexity, crack repair and the topcoat change the total. We give a written price after seeing the room.
Is metallic epoxy durable enough for a garage?
Yes, with a hard topcoat. It is glossy and shows dust and tire marks more than a flake floor, so it suits a show garage better than a daily work garage.
Will a metallic floor fade near a sliding door?
Epoxy can yellow with UV exposure, so floors that get daylight need a UV-stable topcoat. We put one on every metallic floor that sees sun.
Can metallic epoxy go over tile?
We work on concrete. Tile usually needs to come off, and the slab underneath ground and repaired, before a metallic floor goes down.
Shop & Commercial Floor Epoxy Questions
How much does commercial epoxy flooring cost?
HomeAdvisor lists commercial and industrial 100% solids coatings at $12 or more per square foot. Lighter-duty floors can cost less. Contamination, repairs and phasing change the price, so we quote after a site visit.
Can you coat a floor that has years of oil in it?
Often, yes. We grind and treat oil-soaked areas, and badly contaminated sections may need to be cut out and patched. If a floor cannot be made sound enough to hold a coating, we tell you.
How long will my shop be out of use?
It depends on the system and the size. HomeGuide puts polyaspartic at 1 to 2 days to full cure and epoxy at up to a week. We can phase large floors so part of the building stays open.
Do coated shop floors get slippery?
Smooth coatings can be slick with oil or water on them. We add anti-slip aggregate in work areas, wash bays and walkways.
